Comments from my reading diary, December 1994: Rather excessive child abuse moves plot; the hero and heroine marry to prevent the abuse. In a rather dumb way, they lose the abused kid again. The hero almost rapes the heroine early in the marriage in quest of his marital rights, but gets some morals and acts decently. I still find him difficult to accept. It is a quick read and the plot moves, but overall is rather too dark for me.

Notes from my reading diary, May 1999: "This novel left me with the same feeling as did Edith Layton's last novel in the Web of Love trilogy: gorgeous men aren't worth it. The hero is so physically gorgeous, so physically attractive, so physically desirable, that his character flaws are acceptable. He reforms a good bit from the flashback to the bulk of the novel and a wee, wee bit more over the action of the story. It just wasn't quite enough for me, but maybe I'm too picky. The plot is a blend of the cliched and the unique: artist heroine about to lose her home, a spinster on the shelf, meets up with her old sexual obsession, the hero and star of the social scene. The scandal needs to be secret to be amusing, so I can't tell you of it. The author then throws into the plot French spies, beautiful dumb nieces, and lots of intense seduction and sex. There is humor, tension, action, and sweetness. I wanted to know what happened next and was never bored with the book; however, I doubt I'll want to reread it." NY: Avon, 1999.
Notes from my reading diary, May 1999: The use of the river in this novel reminds me of Mary Brunton's Self Control 1810-1. It is hard to say which book is more unrealistic, but I'll go with Dodd's since she freely adds magic caskets and saints. The book starts out like a regency romance and becomes a Prisoner of Zenda action novel, set in mythical and magical kingdoms that are Slavic or Bohemian. The action is non-stop, and the hero and heroine are very likable people although too super-human in their skills and strengths. If you can enjoy magic, improbability, and fantasy, you will probably love this very romantic fantasy.

Dolan, Charlotte L. Black Widow. [set in 1809] NY: Harlequin.

Dolan, Charlotte Louise The Unofficial Suitor. NY: Signet, 1992.

---. The Counterfeit Gengleman. NY: Signet, 1994.

---. Fallen Angel. NY: Signet.

Doyle, Barbara. My Lady's Deception. A Candlelight Regency Special. Candlelight Regencies 703. NY: Dell, 1982.

---. Hunted Heart. NY: Avon, 1984.

Drummond, June. The Imposter. NY: Avon, 1992.

---. The Unsuitable Miss Pelham. NY, 1990.

Dunn, Carola. A ngel. NY: Warner Books, 1984.

---. T he Miser's Sister. NY: Warner Books, 1984.
Comments from my reading diary Jan/Feb 1995: Girl persecuted by evil brother; ultimately finds is a bastard so not related to this truly insane character. Girl nearly killed, saved by scientist/inventor hero from caves. She is taken to London, and other relatives take her and her sister in and try to make them into society people. The heroine resists.

---. L ord Iverbrook's Heir. NY: Warner Books, 1986.

---. Gabrielle's Gamble. NY: Warner, 1987.
Comments from my reading diary Feb/March 1995: [rather incoherent] Brother and sister flee Napoleon's Europe to England and French emigre friend who is being denied money by a spy, is shot on way from France gets spy message--meets hero, spy, later meet at London party of some sort, he helps her out of scrapes and eventually offers dower house to emigre lady and her. Three romances all work out. [my notes are too messy for me to interpret them, but this gives you a sense of the novel's plot and action]

---. Smuggler's Summer. NY: Warner, 1987.
Comments from my reading diary March/April 1995: Fat, poor cousin thins up and captures hearts of beautiful rich cousin's ex-suitor. Set on an estate with secret halls and corridors, smugglers that reform, and a semi-adorable radical speech writer. So-so, some dull spots.

---. A Poor Relation. Harlequin Regency Romance 39. NY: Harlequin, 1990.
Comments from my reading diary Jan/Feb 1995: Fruit grower loses estate and moves in as a poor relation next door to new owner of fruit farm who needs help with it. Also subplot of romance between wounded war hero and shy bluestocking. There is a fun, eccentric old lady. The hero's love is proven by injury to the heroine.

---. A Lord for Miss Larkin. Harlequin Regency Romance 52. NY: Harlequin, 1991.
Comments from my reading diary Jan/Feb 1995: Characters include four aunts, a vulgar cook, a gardener, a nabob, and a sweet girl who reads novels too much. Heroine learns the world is not like novels. She eludes the typical rake and typical stuffed shirt. She has a gambler-but-sweet-at-heart dashing Irish Lord as a cousin. Dogs and urchins add lots of humorous touches. A very nice book.

---. T he Fortune-Hunters. Harlequin Regency Romance 63. NY: Harlequin, 1991.
Comments from my reading diary Jan/Feb 1995: Again two main romances--poor brother and cit's daughter is the secondary one. Heroine and disowned hero who loves architecture the main couple. They team up as design and drawling team. Architectural/Roman Ruins subplot.

---. T he Road to Gretna. Harlequin Regency Romance 73. NY: Harlequin,1992.
Comments from my reading diary Jan/Feb 1995: Two couples join forces on way to Gretna. The plot is very original. Cat plot weak--cat causes troubles and delays and inter-couple interaction--still romantic with great romantic tension. Very enjoyable.

---. M y Lord Winter. Harlequin Regency Romance 86. NY: Harlequin, 1992.
Comments from my reading diary Jan/Feb 1995: An enjoyable tale--I laughed at the start when the carriage fell apart; heroine and companion take stage to stuff [?staff] house, heroine matches hero in chess and conversation, meet in London; rivalry at house party. Two women's friendship blooms. Match between companion and lawyer-bibliophile. Original enough, fun.

---. T hea's Marquis. Harlequin Regency Romance 98. NY: Harlequin,1993.
Comments from my reading diary Jan/Feb 1995: This is a sequel to The Road to Gretna, which I enjoyed a lot. There is a sad subplot of a 1st marriage having trouble, but of course it works out. The Marquis and Thea romance is a typical sort of "I rely on him for all--is it love or no?" There is a big kidnapping and fight.

---. His Lordship's Reward. NY: Zebra, 1994.
Comments from my reading diary, Feb/March 1995: Hero is jerky in his refusal to see he loves a poor heroine. Plot involves Waterloo, Brussels, the Duchess of Richmond's ball, etc.

---. The Captain's Inheritance. NY: Zebra, 1994.
Comments from my reading diary, Feb/March 1995: Annoying in the overlap from His Lordship's Reward (so read far apart). Many of the scenes in the two books are the same, just told from different perspectives with the exact same dialogue. Two physically scarred people settle for each other. A evil man tries to kill for the said inheritance.

---. The Babe and the Baron. NY: Zebra, 1997.

---. Mayhem and Miranda. NY: Zebra, 1997.

---. Crossed Quills. NY: Zebra, 1998.

---. The Improper Governess. NY: Zebra, 1998.
