Ball Dress, 1818. A heavily festooned dress--this dress has artificial flowers on the overdress and two bands of leaf trim on the petticoat. The overdress is split up the back of the dress to display the petticoat beneath ribbon ties. The long sleeves have lace cuffs.

Center: Evening Dress, Full Mourning. I love this Gothic image of the greiving lady. Her veil and cross echoes the clothing of the heroines of the Gothic novels popular at this time. The jewelery and beading on the dress are of jet. Two rows of black roses band the bottom of the skirt.

Right: Carriage Dress, Mourning. This lady has a Russian wrapping-cloak with a deep pereline on. The cape is open in the front, so we can see the black dress beneath it which is trimmed with puff and rouleaux of black crepe. The Parisian bonnet is trimmed with black crepe and black crepe roses and is over a cornette of white with black edges. The reticule is black velvet with white silk trim, while the shoes and gloves are black leather.

Above: A Walking Dress in the coat style with military type braiding added. The psuedo-medieval or Renaissance ruff is displayed above the color. Here the ruff features vandyked lace. The hat resembles a circular mortar-board topped with ostrich feathers. The sleeves are in the extra long style that was popular for a while--note they come down to the split in the fingers. A tiny reticule or drawstring bag holds the things the lady would need on a walk that couldn't be carried by her maid or escort.
